Red and Yellow Black and White

Today circle time got a little racist. We sang the song "Jesus Loves the Little Children", like we do every day. Only today, we used masks to illustrate the children mentioned in the song. When my co-teacher held up the native american mask, a girl with braids and a feather, she said, "Class, this is an Indian. Also called...what is it, Miss Wendy?" To which I replied, "Native American?" and she said, "No...RED. That's it. This is a red person. And this (as she held up the Asian kid with the pointy circular hat) is a yellow person". Then there was a black kid mask, and a white girl that had a Virgin Mary-esque light blue head covering...We then sang the song over and over till all the kids had a turn holding up the masks, thus engraining in their minds that each of these races is assigned a color. Can't wait for the dinner table discussions they'll have tonight...
